Terms of use

What they apply to

These terms govern the use of Halis — the iPhone app, the Android app and the halis.app site —, published by Africatech Studio. They apply as soon as you open an account or sign up for the beta. If you don't agree with them, don't open an account: Halis does not work without one.

The privacy policy is part of them. It says what we keep and what we don't have.

What Halis is, and isn't

Halis is a ledger. Your accounts, envelopes and goals on one side; the expenses you share with a group on the other; and a coach that has read your ledger, and nothing else. Everything that goes in is written by you or by a member of your group.

• Halis never holds your money, executes no payment and is connected to no bank. Marking a repayment records a gesture made elsewhere; it does not make it. Halis is neither a payment institution, nor a credit institution, nor an investment services provider.
• Halis does not read your texts or your bank notifications.
• Halis ranks no one: a balance is a fact to settle, not a grade.
• Halis gives no financial advice. The Coach informs from your ledger; it recommends no product and replaces no adviser.

Your account

• You must be sixteen or older.
• One person, one account. You sign in with your email address, your Google account or your Apple account. There is no password: what protects your account is access to your inbox and to your phone. Keep them protected.
• What you enter binds you: a real first name, so your group recognises you, and amounts you stand behind.
• Every enrolled device appears on the Security screen, and you can remove one at any time. Tell us if you believe someone else is using your account.

The beta

Halis is in closed beta. A beta is not a free service: it is an exchange, and it is written on both sides.

What we ask of you:

• Install Halis and keep it for a few weeks — the time it takes for a budget to show.
• Use it for real: a group expense, an envelope, a balance.
• Write down what breaks, even badly written. One sentence is enough.
• Answer one message from us. Just one.

What we owe you:

• Your account and your data carry over to production. Nothing is wiped at launch; you don't start over.
• No ads, no resale, no third-party trackers.
• We tell you what changes, before it changes.
• You leave when you want, with an export of your data.

The beta is free, and everything in it is open. The price of the personal space will be announced before the public launch, never after the fact, and nothing you have entered will be held against a payment. Invitations go through TestFlight, from Apple, and through a Google Play tester group; their terms apply on top of ours.

Groups

A group is people who invited each other and see the same expenses. What you enter there is seen by all its members, and stays after you leave: it is their ledger too.

The balances Halis shows are calculations from what you have entered. They create no debt and extinguish none: what you owe each other is between you. Halis does not arbitrate a disagreement, collects nothing, and does not guarantee that a repayment marked as done actually happened.

Inviting someone opens the group to their reading: only invite people who have agreed to be there. You can also add a member who has no account; you are then answerable for what you write in their name, and for telling them.

Sharing an account

You can open an account from your personal space to a person you name, and choose what they can do there: view it, add movements under their name, or also adjust its balance and invite others. The account stays yours: closing it is yours alone, and you take an access back whenever you want.

This is neither a joint account nor a group: Halis holds no funds, no one owes anyone anything because of the sharing, and nothing else from your space opens. Only open an account to someone who agreed to be there, and remember that what they write stays under their name, including after you remove them.

What is not allowed

• Using Halis for something illegal: laundering, concealing, inventing debts, or using it to pressure a member.
• Trying to access someone else's account, personal space or groups, or working around what protects them.
• Extracting or scraping the service's content other than through the export of your own data.
• Disrupting the service: overloading it, probing it, or misusing its mechanisms.
• Attaching unlawful content to a movement, or a photo that is not yours to show.
• Reselling, renting or sharing access to your account.

The Coach

The Coach is a conversation grounded in your ledger, produced by a language model. It can be wrong, and it will say so with confidence: a figure it shows comes from your ledger, a sentence it writes comes from it.

It is not a financial adviser, knows nothing of your situation beyond what you have entered, and recommends no product. Decisions remain yours. It only starts if you ask for it, and what it receives is described in the privacy policy.

Who owns what

What you enter is yours: amounts, labels, photos. You only grant us the right to store it, to sync it between your devices and to show it to your group or to the people you open an account to — that is, to run Halis. That right ends with your account, except for what belongs to the group.

Halis — the name, the screens, the code, the design — belongs to Africatech Studio. You may use it; you may not copy it, resell it, or make another app out of it.

Availability and liability

Halis works offline and syncs when the network comes back. But it is a beta: a screen can break, a sync can wait, and we may interrupt the service to fix it. We do everything not to lose anything, and we ask you to keep your important receipts elsewhere too.

Within the limits of the law, our liability is limited to direct and foreseeable damage caused by a fault on our part. It does not cover a debt between members, a marked repayment that did not happen, a decision taken on the strength of the Coach, or a loss due to a device or an inbox you did not protect. Nothing here limits what the law of your country of residence guarantees you as a consumer.

Leaving, or being suspended

You leave when you want: closing your account from the app makes it inaccessible at once, on all your devices. Ask for an export of your data beforehand if you wish — write to us. What you shared in a group stays there.

On our side, we may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms. We say so beforehand, unless urgency does not allow it, and we explain why. If Halis were to shut down, we would tell you at least thirty days in advance, with the means to export.

What changes

These terms will change with the product. We tell you what changes before it changes — in the app, or by email depending on the importance —, and the date at the top says when they date from. Continuing to use Halis after a change means accepting it; if you don't accept it, you can close your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by French law. In case of a dispute, we look for an agreement first: write to us. If that is not possible, the competent courts are those designated by law, without depriving you of the protective rules of your country of residence in the European Union, or of the right to consumer mediation.
