Split an expense and settle up
A group expense splits an amount between the people involved. A settlement then records a payment between two people without creating another expense.
A group expense separates who paid from who takes part in the purchase. The payer advances the money; the split states what each person should cover. Paying and participating are therefore two details to check separately.
Prepare the expense
Open the correct group and check who is involved. A group member may not participate in this purchase. Have the total, currency, date and the name of the person who actually advanced the money ready.
Your group role determines available actions. Observation access allows reading without providing the same commands as access that permits entries or group management.
Add and split
- From the group, tap Add an expense.
- Enter the amount, check the currency and date, then add a description that identifies the purchase.
- Choose the person who paid.
- Open the split and select the people who take a share.
- Keep an equal division or use the amounts or percentages offered to reflect your agreement.
- Check the distributed total, save the split, then review the summary before adding the expense.
For an amount-based split, the amounts must add up to the total. For percentages, check that they add up to 100%. The split counter shows what remains to distribute or what has been allocated in excess; an incomplete split cannot be saved.
Understand an example
You advance 12,000 FCFA for a meal shared equally by three people, including you. Each share is 4,000 FCFA. The other two people each have 4,000 FCFA to cover for this purchase; your own share is not a reimbursement you owe yourself.
If one of those people did not join the meal, remove them from the selection before confirming. Do not retain an equal split between all members simply because they belong to the same group.
Read and correct the record
Group balances combine expenses and settlements already entered. Someone may have advanced other purchases: their overall position does not necessarily match their share of the latest meal.
To revisit an expense, open its detail in the group. Edit and delete commands depend on who paid and on the group role. When allowed, correct the existing item rather than adding another one with the revised split.
Record an actual settlement
After the actual reimbursement, use Settle up in the group. Check the selected direction: money repaid to someone or received from someone, then the person and amount. A partial settlement is possible; the entered amount must not exceed the amount proposed for settlement.
Review the final confirmation and confirm only if the money really changed hands. Halis records the settlement and updates balances; it does not transfer money between people.
If no reimbursement is proposed, inspect balances and existing entries before recreating the expense. If another device still shows the old situation, check syncing before recording a second settlement.
